The deal for Kelleher was confirmed shortly after Mark Flekken, Brentfords First-Choice occupiers last season, a change of € 10 million to Bayer Leverkusen. The two transfers were linked.

Kelleher had made no secret of his wish to become a No. 1 that was impressed by the deputy for Alisson. He performed 20 appearances for Liverpool last season 2023-24, and his chances are likely to be further restricted next season in Anfield due to the arrival of Georgia International Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia.

Flekken made 77 appearances for Brentford after arriving from Freiburg in May 2023 and the 31-year-old missed only a Premier League game last season.

“When Mark Flekken had the opportunity to move to Bayer Leverkusen, we immediately thought of Caoimhin as a replacement,” said Brentford’s football director Phil Giles. “I am not just a very good goalkeeper, I have rarely hit a player for whom everyone has such positive words about their personality and character. I am therefore confident that he will be an excellent addition to the squad.”

“We expected Mark to be our goalkeeper for many years. However, when Bayer Leverkusen made it known that they wanted to carry out this transfer, and Mark made it clear that he was interested in getting closer to home, and with the possibility of the Champions League football we turned our attention to how all parties could achieve this,” added Giles. “Mark did a great job for us and goes with our thanks and support.”
